Eileen BakerIt is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eileen Baker, YAT’s Second President, on Sunday 8 March 2026. Eileen was an extraordinary presence within Youth Action Theatre for nearly four decades, and her influence shaped not only our productions but the very spirit of our community.
Eileen joined YAT in 1986 and quickly became an essential member of the backstage team, working predominantly in wardrobe. Her exceptional eye for detail and flair for imaginative costume design made her a cornerstone of the costume department for 29 years. Between 1986 and 2015 she contributed to almost every production YAT staged, including several tours to Germany, the USSR and the USA.
In 1994, Eileen received the Mayor’s Award for Community Service in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames - recognition of her immense dedication to young people and the arts. A decade later, in 2005, Eileen and her husband Den helped establish the original YAT Management Committee following Eric Yardley’s retirement. That same year, they were jointly awarded the Arts Richmond Accolade for their outstanding contribution to drama in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
Even after Den passed away in 2007, Eileen’s commitment to YAT never wavered. In 2013, she succeeded Eric as YAT’s Second President, a role she carried with great pride, warmth and enthusiasm.

Eileen once wrote, "When my 16-year old daughter joined Youth Action Theatre in 1983, she not only embarked on the very interesting experiences of 'theatre' and entertainment, which developed into her making the 'media' her career, it also opened the door of interest and enjoyment for me and my husband, engendered by its founder, Eric Yardley."
Whether backstage with a costume rail or chatting with new members in the foyer, Eileen made everyone feel part of something special. She loved to share - often with great pride - that she had 5 daughters, 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. We all felt part of Eileen's extended family. The importance of Eileen's presence and her support of YAT is reflected by the fact that she was also affectionately known to many YAT members as simply "Auntie Eileen". Our more recent members would also get to know her as "Our Lady President".
Eileen will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known her. Her creativity, generosity and unwavering dedication to Youth Action Theatre leave a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations for many years to come.
