    Autumn 2016 :: Titanic the Musical :: Reading/Auditions

YAT will next meet at St Peter & St Paul Church Hall, Teddington from 7.30pm on Monday 22 August 2016 where we will be holding a discussion and reading for our Autumn production, Titanic the Musical.

    TITANIC THE MUSICAL
Music and Lyrics by Maury Yeston
    Book by Peter Stone
Directed by Elizabeth Lattimore and Sarah Dowd

    READING & INTRODUCTION EVENING
    Monday 22 August (7.30pm - 10pm)
St Peter & St Paul Church Hall, Teddington

On 15 April 1912 the ‘floating city’ RMS Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland taking the lives of 1,517 men, women and children. This tragic disaster changed history forever. It is a remarkable story of compelling hope followed by sheer anguish. The narrative is a requiem that is grand and catastrophic but also a tale of hope and courage.

As we meet characters from 3rd, 2nd and 1st class, the show pays tribute to those who sailed on Titanic’s maiden voyage and highlights the rigid class structure and economics of the time. Maury Yeston and Peter Stone’s musical intertwines their stories, relationships and shared aspirations regardless of their background or social stature. Each character has the name of a genuine passenger giving the story deeper meaning and a tribute to those who lost their lives on that fateful journey.

This re-worked ensemble version of Titanic the Musical was originally staged in London at the Southwark Playhouse in 2013 to great acclaim. Embark on an epic, ensemble show with soaring choral set pieces exploring the lives of those at the heart of this historic event.

Character breakdowns and audition pieces will be available at the reading which you can take away to prepare for the audition.

    WORKSHOPS
    Wednesday 24 (8pm - 10pm) & Thursday 25 August (7.30pm - 10pm)
St Peter & St Paul Church Hall, Teddington

There will be a SINGING and ACTING workshop followed by a DANCING and ACTING workshop to introduce you to the musical numbers and performance requirements of the show.

For the SINGING - If you are wanting to audition for an ensemble role, you will be asked to sing a section from the opening number of the show “In Every Age”. You will learn/go through this during the singing workshop with the Musical Director, Adam Hope. Please listen to the song and familiarise yourself with it before the workshop. YouTube (the song itself starts a 1min 40sec). If you would like to audition for a lead role then due to the nature of the musical, we have decided it would be better for you to come in to audition with a song that you know well, and that is suited to your voice type. For example:

If you are a Soprano or Mezzo Soprano, you could sing:
“I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables.
“Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera
“Green Finch and Linnet Bird” from Sweeny Todd

If you are an Alto, you could sing:
“On My Own” from Les Miserables.
    “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray
    “Memory” from Cats

If you are a Tenor, you could sing:
    “Joanna” from Sweeny Todd
“Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables
    “One Song Glory” from Rent

If you are a Bass, you could sing:
“All I care About” from Chicago
“Empty Chairs and Empty Tables” from Les Miserables
    “Mr. Cellophane” from Chicago

You will need to bring your own sheet music for anything you decide to sing. It will be most likely that you will NOT sing the entire song, so please prepare your best 32 bars, or a verse and a chorus, and Adam will accompany you. Please don’t feel that you have to do one of the above songs, we would love to hear as much variety on the day as possible! If you are unsure of what type of voice you have, Adam will be talking through this during the singing workshop as well.

For the DANCING - The Choreographer, Lucy Hanneghan, will be looking at the physical distinctions of the different ‘classes’ that are within the show. Lucy will then put you through your paces, and you will learn a short routine, that you will perform as part of the auditions on Tuesday 30 August. We will try to video this and put it up on the audition event page, so that you can practice before the audition.

The ACTING part of the workshops will be looking at accents, and talking through the MANY different characters within the show. We will do some warm ups, and will be also be looking through any accents that will be required. We will ask you to audition with these if necessary. The acting auditions will be minimal, but will take the form of reading through scenes in groups, having some direction, and discussion about characters.

    AUDITIONS
    Monday 29 & Tuesday 30 August (7.30pm - 10pm)
