The founding of Collis
In 1865, Sarah Collis founded a new school in a house in Park Road, assisted by the same "group of ladies and gentlemen" who founded Christ Church in the Causeway.
There were 16 pupils at first, but then 71 by the end of the year. Initially, only girls were admitted and the school was called Park Road Girls School.
Boys were admitted from 1871, with the pupil roll reaching 318 by 1875. Teddington's population grew from 4,000 to 14,000 between the 1871 and 1901 Censuses.
The 20th Century
Following the Education Act of 1891, the era of free education in schools began and in 1902, the school was renamed Station Road School. Miss Sarah Collis retired in 1906 and her niece, Miss Mary Collis became headmistress.
From 1937 to 1960, the school was called Christchurch County Primary School before finally being named Collis Primary School in 1960 (in memory of their founder).
In 1972, the school moved to its present site in Fairfax Road and the school as it now stands was completed in 1982 with new purpose-built Nursery and Infant accommodation.
