JOINED YAT
2010

TESTIMONIAL

Aged about 12 or 13, I saw my first YAT show with my mother, it was Lord of the Flies. I still remember some of that show. I was not a very cultured young man, and I remember thinking that it was very well done for what my mother told me was all just young people.

Aged between 14 and 15 one of my oldest friends joined as he was looking for a theatre group as he was enjoying drama at his school. I saw his first show and throughly enjoyed it. Between six months to a year later, my sister also joined the group, and I saw what a close group it actually was. They continued to be around and I realised how great they were as people.

Aged 16, my mother got tired of my not leaving the house during a summer holiday and told me that I had to join some sort of group. Having always had musical training and through my sister I joined YAT to help with sound for Mixed Doubles, which involved too many people in too small a room, and I am privileged to say that three of the people I shared that week with are still my friends.

I then joined for serious, and have met some of the greatest people I know, and they have helped to change me and made me into a better person that I am actually happy to be. When I left for university I knew that all of the friends I had made would have my back no matter what would happen, and if I needed them, as I did for some, they would be there for me. These are people that I would have otherwise never have met and never have learned about and shared experiences and effectively grew up with.

In the five years that I have actually been a member of the group, I am privileged to say that I have some of the greatest friends that anyone could hope for, they have shaped me into a person capable of dealing with the outside world and all of it's hassles and troubles and that no matter what they will help me.

It is a rare group, everyone talks, everyone is included. It's not just somewhere that people meet and perform a play and that's it. It's a group of people who are legitimately passionate about what they are doing and do it for no more satisfaction than that of helping to create the best possible show that they could. Everyone pitches in as much as they can and with the same goal, in my five years of in being in the group I am yet to see or be a part of a show that has not been fun and ended up being great. It's one of the best experiences of my life.

I have gained more from YAT than I could ever have hoped and would like for it to continue for as long as it possibly could. I know no-one from the group who has turned into a worse person from it. From the group I have achieved much more than I imagined I would have in an area that I had not expected to. I am a better person because of it and if it were to be forced to close then it would be an exceptionally sad event.
